"Brooke’s Believers is a non-profit charitable organization founded in march of 2008 when a 5 year old little girl named Brooke Sleeper was diagnosed with all (acute lymphoblastic leukemia). She was officially diagnosed at Texas children's hospital in Houston after a visit to her pediatrician for ongoing complaints of leg pain.
Afterwards, everyone was trying to figure out how to show their support and help out with things. the idea was brought up to have a mud bug benefit to help out with some of the family’s vast expenses and for friends and family of Brooke to show that they were there to support her. Since crawfish are a local favorite this time of year, we hoped the benefit would be a hit. After many hours of planning and everyone in the group looking for help in all directions, the benefit was kicked off on April 24, 2008 with a turn out beyond anyone’s belief.
It is truly amazing what people will give if you just ask, and we proved that by ending this event with earnings over $40,000. Still surprised by the large sum of money brought in by this event, everyone thought, “how could we not keep this going?” It was decided to make Brooke’s believers mud bug benefit an annual event.
On June 2nd 2012 Brooke's Believers received a 501 (c) (3) exemption status from the internal revenue service. Brooke's Believers will constantly be searching the community for children and who are fighting life threatening illnesses in need of support. the goal of this group is to help out with the financial hardships that families and children fighting a life threatening illness endure. Brooke’s Believers mud bug benefit will be held every year around mid April. In the future we hope to hold several events throughout the year, and also be involved in other local events. we would like to thank everyone for the huge response we have received, and we hope that each year our earnings and popularity will grow.
